Yang Ming Marine’s former chairman Bronson Hsieh said at an industry event that the rise of Southeast Asian ports will come at the expense of Taiwan’s key container port Kaohsiung, which has steadily tumbled down port rankings after experiencing its heyday in the late 1990s.
Speaking at a forum organised by Taiwan’s Maritime and Port Bureau, Hsieh said: “From 1992 to 1999, Kaohsiung ranked among the world’s three busiest ports. Unfortunately, Kaohsiung was ranked 19th last year, and may fall two rungs down for this year.”
