The Commissioner toured production areas and a ship under construction. He met with staff and leaders, including CEO Pierroberto Folgiero, Merchant Ships Division GM Luigi Matarazzo, and SVP Davide Cucino. They discussed innovation, decarbonization, and digitalization initiatives.
The visit emphasized strengthening European shipbuilding competitiveness. Leaders discussed high value-added ships, strategic market recovery, and defense capabilities. They also highlighted decarbonization technologies like hydrogen and nuclear. Digital initiatives are central to efficiency and sustainability.
Folgiero said the visit recognized Fincantieri’s role in Europe’s shipbuilding and maritime economy. He stressed the importance of innovation, digitalization, decarbonization, and recovering strategic markets. Commissioner Tzitzikostas praised the shipyard and noted the EU Maritime Industry Strategy will outline actions to boost competitiveness, resilience, and technological leadership.
The Monfalcone shipyard, founded in 1908, is Fincantieri’s hub for new-generation cruise ships. It works with 600 regional suppliers and employs over 23,000 workers. Since 1990, it has delivered more than 40 vessels. Recent investments improved infrastructure, safety, and employee well-being. The site integrates robotics, digital twins, real-time tracking, AI, augmented reality, and additive manufacturing. It serves as a benchmark for quality, efficiency, and sustainability.
