Swedish battery system supplier Echandia has won a contract from ABB to deliver a 3.7 MWh battery system for a new Canadian Coast Guard hybrid icebreaker to be built at Helsinki Shipyard. The deal marks Echandia’s first entry into the Canadian market and expands its global presence in sustainable maritime propulsion.

The hybrid vessel will combine conventional engines with advanced battery technology to cut emissions and improve energy efficiency in Arctic operations.

“This contract is a significant milestone for Echandia. It opens the door to a new and strategically important market and highlights the confidence placed in our technology by ABB and the Canadian Coast Guard,” said Torbjörn Bäck, CEO of Echandia.

ABB, which awarded the order, selected Echandia’s lithium-titanate oxide (LTO) battery system for its reliability, safety, and performance in extreme environments. “Echandia offered a competitive solution based on lifetime and safety, so it was an easy choice for us,” said Samuli Hänninen, Global Segment Manager for Icebreaking Ships at ABB Marine & Ports.

Lastly, delivery of the battery system is planned for the second half of 2026, with the vessel expected to enter service in 2028.
