Kalmar has secured an order from Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) to deliver 16 hybrid straddle carriers for use at the Cape Town and Port Elizabeth container terminals. The order was booked in Q4 2025, with deliveries scheduled for completion in Q2 2026.

The deal marks the first delivery of hybrid straddle carriers to a customer in Southern Africa. Twelve units will operate at the Port Elizabeth Terminal, and four will serve the Cape Town Terminal.

TPT operates 16 sea-cargo terminals across South Africa, offering cargo handling for containers, vehicles, and bulk goods. The company’s investment supports its goal of improving operational efficiency while cutting emissions and fuel use.

“We are committed to improving efficiency and sustainability across all our ports,” said Dean Moodley, General Manager of Capital Projects at TPT. “These hybrid carriers will help reduce fuel consumption, noise, and carbon emissions while improving performance. Kalmar remains a key partner in our fleet renewal.”

Kalmar’s hybrid technology reduces fuel consumption and emissions by up to 40% compared to traditional diesel-electric machines. The new units will enhance both environmental performance and long-term cost efficiency for TPT.

Karri Keskinen, Head of Global Sales for Horizontal Transportation at Kalmar, said: “We are proud to continue supporting TPT’s sustainability journey. This order highlights our shared commitment to greener, more efficient port operations.”

The agreement reinforces Kalmar’s position as a leader in eco-efficient cargo-handling solutions and strengthens its long-standing partnership with TPT in advancing sustainable port operations across Southern Africa.
