Greek shipowner Thenamaris has returned to the crude tanker newbuilding market with an order for two suezmaxes at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, marking its first newbuilding move in the segment in more than a decade.
Shipbuilding and broking sources said the Nikolas Martinos-led company has agreed to two scrubber-fitted 158,000 dwt vessels, each priced at around $81m, with deliveries expected in 2027.
The order comes as several major Greek owners return to the tanker yards amid strong freight markets and limited early delivery slots.
The suezmax addition follows a broad modernisation of Thenamaris’s fleet, which in recent years included newbuildings across both the tanker and dry bulk segments. The company has also been active in fleet renewal, selling older tonnage and acquiring modern secondhand vessels.
According to industry databases, Thenamaris currently operates a diversified fleet of around 90 ships — including 51 tankers. The company’s move comes amid renewed confidence among Greek tanker owners, with TMS Tankers, Dynacom, Laskaridis Maritime and Evalend Shipping all recently linked to crude carrier orders in China.
