A leading container terminal in India has ordered 30 Konecranes Rubber-Tired Gantry cranes (RTGs) with E-Hybrid technology. The cranes will run entirely on onboard batteries charged by grid electricity, delivering zero tailpipe emissions and efficient energy use. The order was booked in Q3 2025, with delivery planned for Q1 2027.
The new greenfield terminal aims to set benchmarks for container handling in India. The 30 RTGs will power yard operations and support the terminal’s eco-efficiency goals.
All cranes feature Konecranes’ E-Hybrid technology. The terminal opted for a busbar-and-battery setup. Onboard batteries allow the RTGs to operate even during grid outages, while dynamic charging from the busbar meets demand during operations. Peak power demand drops to just 60 kW per RTG, compared to up to 400 kW for traditional electric RTGs, easing grid pressure and reducing substation costs.
“This project demonstrates how far E-Hybrid technology has come,” said Shyam Pathak, Sales Director, Konecranes Port Solutions. “Large terminals can now launch fully electric operations even with unreliable grid supply. This sets a new reference point for eco-friendly terminal design.”
