ABS granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for its innovative wireless fire and gas detection system. The system enhances safety in maritime operations.
Traditional detection systems transmit signals via power cables to a control panel. SHI’s design uses the vessel’s metal structure to carry low-voltage power. Fire and gas signals are converted into magnetic waves and sent wirelessly through the ship’s metal surface to the control station.
“This approach overcomes challenges like shadowing, interference, absorption, and reflection that affect conventional wireless systems,” said Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior VP and CTO. “It reduces cabling and adds flexibility and scalability for critical safety systems.”
ABS reviewed the system using its goal-based standards framework under the Rules for Alternative Arrangements, Novel Concepts, and New Technologies.
“This project marks a milestone in reliable wireless systems for ships,” said Haeki Jang, SHI Executive VP and CTO. “Surface wave technology delivers stable communication even in complex vessel environments. SHI will continue expanding wireless applications to improve safety, efficiency, and operations at sea.”
