ABS and the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance the use of small modular reactors (SMRs) in marine and offshore industries.
The MoU sets a framework for both organizations to share knowledge and collaborate on joint research projects, including SMR-powered ship designs and floating SMR power platforms. The partnership will also explore the development of regulatory guidelines and international standards for nuclear-powered maritime applications.
“Nuclear energy provides unmatched energy density and reliability,” said Christopher J. Wiernicki, ABS Chairman and CEO. “It is becoming a practical, scalable solution for powering ports, producing hydrogen, and supporting offshore systems such as data centers, synthetic fuel platforms, and desalination.”
