Major Investment in Automation
DP World is investing £170 million in new container handling technology at London Gateway. The focus is on digitalisation and automation to improve port operations.

Revolutionary Empty Container Handling
The Empty Superstack uses High Bay Storage (HBS) technology. It stores 20- and 40-foot empty containers up to 16 tiers high in a fully automated facility. This improves yard capacity, efficiency, and safety. The system operates like a giant vending machine for containers.

Advanced Technology
BOXBAY, a joint venture between DP World and Germany’s SMS group, developed the fully electric stacker cranes. They automatically retrieve and deliver containers with precision. The modular system integrates with existing port operations. Removing multiple tiers from the automated stacking crane (ASC) yard reduces rehandling and housekeeping, allowing ASCs to work faster.

Capacity and Performance
Installed at London Gateway’s all-electric Berth 4, the Empty Superstack will hold up to 27,000 TEU. The system improves truck turnaround times, operational efficiency, safety, and environmental performance. The project will complete in just over two years.

Global Innovation
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, DP World CEO, said the system scales easily, is automated, and sustainable. Stephen Whittingham, EVP North Europe, added it improves reliability for customers and safety for staff.

Proven Technology
BOXBAY has been tested at DP World’s Jebel Ali Port, handling nearly 500,000 TEU. Its modular design and energy regeneration features make it one of the most advanced and sustainable container handling systems worldwide.

Future Outlook
DP World aims to set new standards for efficiency, safety, and sustainability in global ports with this technology. The London Gateway deployment demonstrates its commitment to intelligent logistics and operational innovation.
