HMM has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with four subsidiaries of Hanwha Group, Hanwha Power Systems, Hanwha Ocean, Hanwha Aerospace, and Hanwha Systems, along with Korean Register (KR), to jointly develop a next-generation zero-carbon propulsion system for ships.

The partnership aims to design an innovative propulsion system that uses ammonia-based gas turbines to generate thrust and fuel cells to produce electrical power, enabling fully carbon-free vessel operations.

The project will initially focus on container vessels. It will include the concept design of a hybrid propulsion system combining fuel cells and battery technologies. The design will also combine economic feasibility studies and the development of optimized hull forms for the new technology.

Through this collaboration, HMM will contribute its operational expertise. Hanwha Group will apply its advanced technical capabilities, and KR will provide technical verification and classification support. Together, the partners aim to create a synergistic model that accelerates maritime decarbonization.

This initiative supports HMM’s ambitious “Net-Zero” target, which has been advanced to 2045. The company continues to lead the industry’s energy transition by adopting LNG dual-fuel and methanol-powered containerships, in line with tightening environmental regulations and growing customer demand for sustainable shipping solutions.
