Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) has contributed 4 million Swiss francs to support UN Trade and Development’s E-commerce and Digital Economy Programme for 2025–2029.
The funding will strengthen the programme’s work in research, technical cooperation, and international dialogue, helping developing countries integrate more effectively into the global digital economy.
SECO Head of Trade Promotion Monica Rubiolo announced the contribution alongside UNCTAD Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan during the 16th UNCTAD conference in Geneva.
“Switzerland supports an environmentally sustainable digital economy and a stronger multilateral digital trading system,” said Ms. Rubiolo.
Ms. Grynspan thanked Switzerland, noting, “This partnership helps ensure that digitalization benefits everyone and that no one is left behind.”
Switzerland and UN Trade and Development have worked together since 2021 to help developing countries such as Ghana, Peru, and Tunisia assess and improve their e-trade readiness. Their partnership also promotes data governance and women’s participation in the digital economy.
Switzerland serves on the programme’s core donor advisory board, alongside Australia, the Netherlands, and Sweden.
The E-commerce and Digital Economy Programme supports developing nations through e-trade readiness assessments, e-commerce strategies, law reform, and initiatives such as eTrade for Women and eTrade for All.
