PD Ports has introduced fully automated weighbridge systems at Teesport and Hartlepool, increasing capacity to handle up to 7,000 tonnes of bulk cargo per weighbridge per day. The upgrade improves safety, speeds up turnaround times, and enhances accuracy for customers.
Traditional weighbridges relied on manual operations, often causing bottlenecks and delays. The new system integrates automated traffic lights, ANPR cameras, and driver self-service terminals with Commtrac, PD Ports’ terminal operating system, creating a seamless digital process.
“Automation has completely changed how we operate,” said Grant Honzik, PD Ports’ Director of Bulks Operations. “We’ve reduced congestion, improved data accuracy, and given customers faster, more reliable service. This investment future-proofs our operations and strengthens supply chain performance.”
The automated system offers key benefits:
- Faster turnaround – reduced waiting times and smoother flow of goods.
- Greater accuracy – consistent weigh data, fewer disputes.
- Better visibility – enhanced digital reporting for logistics planning.
With five automated weighbridges now active at Tees Dock and one at Hartlepool, PD Ports is setting a new standard in technology-driven bulk handling.
The project forms part of PD Ports’ wider strategy to modernise bulk operations through digitalisation, sustainable equipment, and port-centric logistics. Recent initiatives include the rollout of Commtrac, electric cranes, and new specialist logistics vehicles.
“Our industry is evolving fast,” added Honzik. “By investing in smart technology, PD Ports is not just keeping up – we’re setting new benchmarks for bulk cargo efficiency in the UK.”
