At Intermodal Europe 2025 in Barcelona, UNIT45 unveiled its new electric reefer container for road, rail, and sea transport. The unit features the advanced Star Cool 1.1 cooling system, which runs on the ultra-low GWP refrigerant R1234YF. With LBA insulation foam and waterborne paint, it sets a new sustainability standard in the reefer market.

The reefer is built for high efficiency and reliability over the next decade. Its eco-friendly design reduces emissions and energy use. R1234YF refrigerant minimizes environmental impact, while sustainable materials highlight UNIT45’s focus on green innovation.

The Star Cool 1.1 unit offers low leakage rates and strong energy performance, achieving one of the lowest Total Equivalent Warming Impact (TEWI) scores in the industry. TEWI measures total environmental impact from both refrigerant leaks and power consumption.

“Reefers need refrigerants that are safe, efficient, and climate-friendly,” said Georg Fösel, Manager of Refrigeration Technology and Industry Affairs at Maersk Container Industry. “Star Cool 1.1 supports three refrigerant types and meets ISO 20854 safety standards. This gives customers flexibility for any operation or region.”

UNIT45 designed the reefer for durability and cost-effective performance. It holds up to 33 euro pallets, ideal for large shipments. Its strong build ensures smooth operation across road, rail, and sea networks.

“This container shows our commitment to innovation and sustainability,” said Jan Koolen, Managing Director of UNIT45. “We aim to lead in developing eco-friendly transport solutions and driving a greener logistics future.”

UNIT45 has already made the new reefer available for customers. With its low emissions, high efficiency, and long lifespan, it offers one of the most sustainable refrigerated transport options on the market today.
