US classification society ABS has agreed to acquire the MetaSHIP training and simulation platform from Orka Informatics, following in the footsteps of its UK peer Lloyd’s Register, which bought Ocean Technologies Group (OTG) in late 2024. The move marks another major step by a leading class society into immersive digital learning as the industry looks to close the skills gap created by rapid technological change.
The deal, which includes MetaSHIP’s intellectual property and related simulator assets, is subject to regulatory approval in Türkiye. It will form part of the expansion of ABS Training Solutions, giving the organisation a broader base to deliver next-generation seafarer training worldwide.
ABS plans to roll out the technology across its network of training centres in Qatar, Greece and Singapore, as well as through remote and on-board programs. The MetaSHIP system powers an immersive, game-based experience centred on the ABS MetaSHIP Fleet—a suite of virtual vessels that let seafarers build real operational competence without ever setting foot on a ship.
“Investment in advanced training that delivers true competence rather than minimum standards is not optional; it’s a strategic imperative for fleet safety and resilience,” said Christopher Wiernicki, ABS chairman and CEO, adding: “The maritime workforce must be ready to manage hybrid systems, evolving safety standards and changing regulations.”
MetaSHIP combines interactive vessel and port simulations with assessment tools that monitor and evaluate performance. The acquisition also includes ODENES, a platform that tracks training progress and reporting, and a Navigational Skill and Behavioral Assessment module used to measure and improve operational performance.
MetaSHIP founder Levent Şen said the project began as an effort to make maritime education more accessible. “Seeing it evolve into a technology that will now empower seafarers worldwide under ABS’ leadership is incredibly rewarding,” he said.
As part of the expansion, ABS has appointed Campbell Smith as senior vice president of ABS Training Solutions. Smith, who joins in November from Maersk Training, brings experience in maritime operations and commercial strategy, including building global training programs and growth frameworks.
