Peninsula and the University of Gibraltar are strengthening their strategic partnership to train the next generation of seafarers. Building on a Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier this year, they have launched the Peninsula Maritime Simulation Suite. Funded by Peninsula, this high-tech facility will transform cadet education and professional development.
The investment meets mandatory UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) training requirements and positions Gibraltar as a rising hub for maritime excellence. The suite supports the University’s vision of a world-class Maritime Simulation Centre and expands the reach of its BSc (Hons) Maritime Science and Cadetship programme. Cadets can now complete the MCA-required simulation training and advance toward their Certificate of Competence as Officers of the Watch.

John A. Bassadone, Founder and CEO of Peninsula, said, “We are proud to support Gibraltar’s maritime future. This investment ensures our seafarers receive world-class training locally and strengthens Gibraltar’s role as a centre of maritime excellence.”
Aaron Lopez, Head of the University of Gibraltar’s Maritime Academy, added, “The Peninsula Maritime Simulation Suite is a game-changer. It allows us to deliver high-impact, cost-effective training, aligned with industry needs, while attracting international talent.”
The facility features a Part Task Navigational Bridge Simulator, fully compliant with the MCA’s updated sea-time equivalency rules. It supports multi-language instruction in English, Spanish, and French, and offers tailored modules for Peninsula officers, including LNG bunkering and complex operations.
Using Wärtsilä technology, the suite is the only facility of its kind in the region. It gives the University of Gibraltar a competitive edge in attracting students and developing industry-ready professionals. The Peninsula Maritime Simulation Suite reflects a shared commitment to excellence in education, maritime training, and research for the future of seafaring.
