Toll Group has introduced two new Volvo FMe Electric 6×4 Prime Movers into its fleet to support BlueScope Steel’s freight and warehousing operations, marking a significant step in decarbonising Australia’s heavy logistics sector.

The new vehicles deliver a 270 km range per charge and can haul up to 26.5 tonnes, cutting 192 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. Operating within BlueScope’s logistics network, they will help reduce emissions, noise, and environmental impact while maintaining the reliability and performance essential for steel transport.

The initiative forms part of Toll Group’s $67 million investment in battery-electric heavy vehicles and charging infrastructure, co-funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) under its Driving the Nation program, which will introduce 28 electric vehicles across Toll’s fleet.

“This collaboration with BlueScope reflects our shared commitment to innovation and sustainability,” said Michael Rugendyke, President, Toll Group – Resources & Industrials. “By integrating Volvo Electric Prime Movers into our operations, we’re proving that electric heavy vehicles are a viable, real-world solution today.”

Jeff Moore, National Manager Supply Chain at BlueScope, added: “Decarbonising transport is essential to achieving our climate ambitions. Working with Toll Group and Volvo Group allows us to take meaningful action to reduce emissions while continuing to deliver for our customers.”

Unveiled at Toll’s Arndell Park facility in Sydney, the two vehicles have now entered service, transporting steel products between BlueScope facilities in metropolitan Sydney. The deployment will also provide key data and insights to guide future low-emission transport projects.
