CMA CGM Group has signed a letter of intent with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) to construct six 1,700 TEU LNG-powered containerships, marking the first-ever order by a major international shipping line for vessels built in India. All six ships will be registered under the Indian flag and built with technical cooperation from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The new vessels will be LNG-capable and prepared for low-carbon fuels, significantly reducing emissions and supporting CMA CGM’s goal of achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050. Deliveries are scheduled between 2029 and 2031.

This landmark agreement reinforces CMA CGM’s support for India’s “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives. It also strengthens the company’s long-term investment in the Indian maritime sector, including port terminals, logistics, shipbuilding, and crew development.

Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM, stated:

“I am pleased that CMA CGM is the first international shipping company to order LNG vessels built in India. This milestone reflects the trust we place in India’s industrial and technological capabilities and supports Prime Minister Modi’s ambition to make India a global shipbuilding power.”

Cochin Shipyard CMD Madhu S. Nair added:

“We are pleased that CMA CGM has chosen CSL to be part of this landmark initiative. Collaborating with HD KSOE reinforces our commitment to delivering high-quality, sustainable vessels and bringing world-class shipbuilding to India.”

CMA CGM currently employs 17,000 people across India, operates 19 weekly services, and maintains strategic stakes in terminals at Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal (NSFT) and Mundra Port. Its Global Business Services (GBS) center in Chennai employs over 9,000 staff, supporting operations in 160 agencies worldwide and managing over 60% of the Group’s key business processes.
