Rhenus has launched its new inland barge Rhenus Berlin I at the Bulk Cargo Terminal in the Port of Szczecin. The vessel marks a key step in sustainable transport for the wind energy sector.
Built between April and September 2025 at the Szczecin shipyard, the 100-metre barge was designed for ENERCON. It can carry two rotor blades up to 86 metres long and is ready for future 88-metre blades.
Rhenus built the vessel using two existing barge sections, saving materials and reducing emissions. It runs on HVO100 biofuel and uses a recycled engine with a bow thruster for better maneuverability.
“The christening of Rhenus Berlin I shows how inland shipping drives innovation and sustainability,” said Martin Panasewicz, Managing Director of Deutsche Binnenreederei. “It also reflects the strong partnership between German and Polish shipbuilders.”
The vessel will soon begin operations for ENERCON, delivering wind turbine blades across northern Germany. “We design tailor-made, multimodal solutions to keep projects on schedule,” said Hendrik Peterburs, Vice President of ENERCON Global Logistics. “Rhenus Berlin I proves what efficient, low-emission logistics can achieve.”
With this new barge, Rhenus strengthens its inland fleet and supports Europe’s clean energy transition.
