Taiwan Strait: Disruption unlikely, but military risk remains

The Taiwan Strait handles US$586 billion in annual trade and sees 88% of the world’s largest cargo ships pass through its waters.

China’s military exercises near Taiwan have evolved significantly over the past three decades.

By August 2022, China established six exercise zones completely surrounding the island. Ballistic missiles overflew Taiwan for the first time, landing east of the island in waters used by commercial vessels. The May 2024 exercises expanded further, positioning military zones east of Taiwan near Yonaguni Island and south near the Bashi Channel.
