South Korean yard Hanwha Ocean has claimed a world-first in LNG handling, successfully carrying out a ship-to-ship (STS) transfer of liquefied natural gas between two vessels while both were still on sea trials.
The landmark operation took place off Geoje Island, involving the newbuilds Maran Gas Syros and GasLog’s Woodside Jirrubakura.
According to the builder, the controlled transfer of the super chilled fuel— completed without incident — marks a major step forward in LNG bunkering and handling safety.
“This successful test confirms that our LNG technology and operational systems are ready for the next generation of clean energy shipping,” Hanwha Ocean said in a statement, describing the achievement as a demonstration of “engineering precision and global leadership in cryogenic transfer operations.”
