SAAM Towage, the largest tug operator in the Americas, has added the Charrán to its fleet at the Port of Callao, Peru’s main terminal and one of the busiest on South America’s west coast. The vessel is already supporting berthing and unberthing operations.

“The Peruvian market is strategic for us. We are committed to growing and investing to provide the best coverage for our customers in the Pacific,” said Hernán Gómez, Managing Director of the Towage Division.

Country Manager for Chile-Peru, Cristián Cifuentes, added: “This new tug reinforces our service of excellence, bringing state-of-the-art technology and the highest safety standards to critical operations.”

As is tradition, the tug was named after a local seabird known for its agility and elegance, symbolizing the efficiency and skill the company aims to deliver.

Technical Specs

  • Length: 24.4 m | Beam: 12 m

  • Bollard pull: 80 metric tons

  • Speed: 13 knots

  • Engines: 2,350 kW Caterpillar, 1,800 rpm

  • Designer: Robert Allan Ltd. (Canada)

  • Builder: Sanmar Shipyards (Turkey)

  • Certifications: FiFi 1 (firefighting capability)

The Charrán is highly maneuverable and versatile, designed for large-vessel assistance in restricted harbors, while enhancing safety and emergency response at Callao.
