The Grimaldi Group has welcomed the Grande Svezia, the second of ten next-generation Pure Car & Truck Carriers (PCTC) under construction at China Merchants Heavy Industries Jiangsu.
Grande Svezia is 220 meters long, 38 meters wide, and weighs 91,611 gross tons. It sails at 18 knots and carries up to 9,000 CEU across 14 decks. Like sister ship Grande Shanghai, it transports both electric and conventional vehicles.
The ship is ammonia-ready, built for future conversion to carbon-free fuel. It achieves zero emissions in port using a 5 MWh lithium battery system and cold ironing capability.
Energy-saving features include 2,500 square meters of solar panels, silicone hull coatings, and smart ventilation and climate control. Its main engine uses advanced exhaust treatment to cut SOx and particulate matter. A selective catalytic reduction system keeps NOx within IMO Tier III limits.
The vessel also features an Air Lubrication System, optimized hull design, and a gate rudder – a first for PCTC vessels – improving propulsion efficiency and maneuverability.
Grande Svezia meets top environmental standards, earning Green Plus, Green Star 3, Comfort Vibration, and Comfort Noise Port notations. It consumes up to 50% less fuel than older car carriers.
The ship honors Sweden, where Grimaldi has operated for over 30 years and runs the nation’s only private port in Wallhamn.

Grande Svezia will soon make her maiden voyage from Taicang and Lianyungang. She will carry 3,100 vehicles and 5,800 meters of rolling cargo, including buses, trucks, and construction equipment, bound for Persian Gulf markets.
