The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set ambitious regulations to achieve a 70% reduction in ocean freight CO2e emissions by 2050, compared to 2008 levels. In response to this environmental challenge, Bolloré Logistics has launched SEAalternative, a solution designed to diminish the carbon impact of ocean shipments through the use of biofuel, a key strategy in addressing this global issue.

Initially offered through two carriers, SEAalternative is now accessible on any trade lanes and carriers, catering to both individual exceptional shipments and contractual arrangements. This innovative approach can deliver an impressive up to 84% reduction in CO2e emissions compared to traditional shipping methods, adhering to the physical limit outlined by Smart Freight Center guidelines. SEAalternative employs biofuel derived from used cooking oil, ensuring the exclusion of palm oil for sustainability.

This eco-friendly solution is characterized by a seamless and verified end-to-end process. Bolloré Logistics attributes the biofuel’s environmental benefits to each client’s shipment based on their specific needs, providing quarterly declarations. The carbon savings are meticulously outlined in the client’s CO2e dashboard and undergo an annual audit by a third party.

The introduction of the SEAalternative offer aligns with Bolloré Logistics’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program, “Powering Sustainable Logistics,” initiated in 2018 to offer sustainable supply chain solutions. Bolloré Logistics has set new greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets in accordance with the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), aiming for a 22% absolute reduction in scope 3 GHG emissions from downstream transportation and distribution by 2030, using a 2022 base year. In light of these goals, Bolloré Logistics encourages its customers to integrate sustainability practices into their operational management.
