G2 Ocean cuts 20 hours weekly with Digital Equipment System

G2 Ocean, the world’s largest open hatch ship operator, has cut more than 20 hours per week from equipment management. The company implemented Onix Work, a digital equipment compliance management system, across its global operations.

The system creates digital twins for all equipment, allowing tracking and management from anywhere. It now standardizes compliance practices for over 1 million pieces of equipment at 290 locations.

Equipment management is crucial in shipping. Delays are costly, and dockside mistakes can risk safety. G2 Ocean operates on a massive scale, with 1.6 million bulk items like slings and 6,700 serialized assets, spread across 120 vessels. In 2024 alone, it carried 27 million tons of cargo to 60 countries over 3,500 port calls.

Previously, equipment oversight relied on manual processes and paperwork, consuming over 40 hours per week. Onix Work centralizes all equipment data, documents, and history. Inspectors, equipment managers, and dock workers can access the system in real time. QR codes or RFID tags let users verify equipment safety instantly.

Richard Stannard, G2 Ocean’s Senior Equipment Manager, highlighted the benefits: “Standardizing our processes has improved safety, compliance, and control. Onix lets us set one standard across the company.”

Onix CEO Unni Ulland added: “G2 Ocean sets a precedent for the industry. Digital systems like this improve safety and deliver measurable operational value.”
