Damen Shipyards Group has joined forces with AAAPropulsion to enhance the performance of its electric tugs. The partnership will see AAAPropulsion’s innovative A-Pod system integrated into Damen’s vessels, delivering improved efficiency and stability.

AAAPropulsion, based in Boven-Leeuwen in the Netherlands, specializes in electric maritime propulsion. Its A-Pod is a 360° azimuthing thruster with an integrated electric motor housed in the lower pod and cooled by surrounding water. Fitted beneath the hull, the system reduces drag, lowers the vessel’s center of gravity, and enhances overall stability.

Damen has already delivered several fully electric tugs worldwide. With the A-Pod, these vessels will operate even more efficiently while continuing to produce zero emissions.

Following successful integration in tugs and workboats, Damen plans to explore other applications for the A-Pod system. Variants include a planetary gearbox (PG), direct drive (DD), and the CRP model with contra-rotating propellers.

Jean-Pierre van Lankveld, Category Manager Propulsion at Damen, said, “We aim to be the most sustainable and connected shipbuilder in the world. Collaborating with partners like AAAPropulsion helps us move closer to that goal.”

Dick-Jan de Blaeij, CEO of AAAPropulsion, added, “We are excited about this partnership. Damen shares our vision for innovation and sustainability. Together, we can unlock new levels of vessel efficiency.”
