Emirates Shipping Line (ESL) has joined the World Shipping Council’s (WSC) newly launched Cargo Safety Program, an industry-wide initiative aimed at reducing the growing number of ship fires. The program, launched on September 15, sets a new benchmark for cargo safety in global shipping.

The initiative uses AI-powered screening and standardized inspection methods to identify misdeclared or undeclared dangerous goods before loading, creating a feedback system to improve safety practices.

“The launch of WSC’s Cargo Safety Program marks a huge step forward for all of us in the industry – we at ESL are committed to actively participating in and contributing to the success of the program, to ensure the safety of our seafarers and assets, while we protect the environment,” said Till Ole Barrelet, Chief Executive Officer of ESL.

Michael Davies, Chief Operations Officer of ESL, added: “As we leverage the powers of technology and incorporate inspection standards to further optimise our operations, ESL will continue to do as much as we can to prevent misdeclared cargo from being brought on board, to minimise potential risks and harm to our stakeholders – from our crew to our customers.”

“We are excited to partner with the WSC and fellow industry leaders on this program to further the sector’s efforts in improving maritime safety,” Barrelet continued. “The safe passage of cargo across our oceans underscores the integrity of our supply chain, and we must do what we can to protect it.”
