The new Marine Container Examination Facility, designated in honor of the Africville Seasides, has officially commenced operations at the Port of Halifax.

The Africville Seasides MCEF will strengthen security and expand capacity for examining cargo transiting through the Port.

The purpose-built facility bears the name of the Africville Seasides, a historic hockey team from the Coloured Hockey League of the Maritimes. The designation was selected through community engagement coordinated by the Africville Heritage Trust with Africville community members and descendants in March 2024.

The facility replaces another located in the Burnside Industrial Park, reducing port congestion while improving efficiency, safety, security, and operations for the Canada Border Services Agency.

The facility will also decrease container truck transits across the MacKay Bridge, conserving fuel and reducing emissions.

The Africville Seasides MCEF received partial funding through the National Trade Corridors Fund by the Government of Canada. In 2023, the facility earned an Envision-Verified Award recognizing it as best-in-class sustainable infrastructure.

Fulvio Fracassi, President and CEO of the Halifax Port Authority, stated the new Africville Seasides Marine Container Examination Facility will support Port growth and enhance supply chain security, helping Canadian businesses compete and expand in international markets.

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, added that constructing a new Marine Container Examination Facility at the Port of Halifax will improve cargo efficiency, strengthen supply chain resilience, enhance border security, and reinforce Halifax’s role as a critical gateway for international trade.
