South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean has won a KRW1.93trn ($1.4bn) order from Taiwan’s Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp for seven liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel containerships that come with some unique features.
The vessels, each with a capacity of 15,880 teu, will deliver in the first half of 2029.
The project will feature the world’s first LNG fuel tanks designed for a pressure rating of 1.0 bar, compared with the existing 0.7-bar design, enabling safer and longer storage of vaporised gas. Moreover, the engines are designed to be ammonia-ready.
“This initial contract with Yang Ming is recognition of Hanwha Ocean’s differentiated eco-friendly technologies and design capabilities,” said Kim Hee-cheul, CEO of Hanwha Ocean.
