New sanctions designate 32 entities across multiple countries as US seeks to disrupt Iran-backed group’s Red Sea operations.
The US Treasury Department has unleashed its most comprehensive sanctions package to date against Iran-backed Houthi maritime operations, targeting a sprawling international network that spans from Chinese logistics companies to UAE-based oil tankers in an unprecedented effort to cripple the group’s ability to threaten global shipping.
The sanctions, announced this week, designate 32 individuals and entities while identifying four vessels that Treasury officials say represent the “full spectrum” of Houthi maritime activities from weapons procurement and smuggling to the attacks on commercial shipping that have disrupted one of the world’s most critical trade routes since November 2023.
