The Panama Canal has introduced the NetZero Slot, a new weekly transit reservation category for low-emission vessels. The move supports the canal’s goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.
The first competition for the slot will take place October 3, 2025, for transits during the week of November 2–8, 2025.
Winners will get priority benefits, including their choice of transit date, guaranteed passage within 24 hours, Just-in-Time service, and the option to swap vessels of similar size.
To qualify, ships must be dual-fuel and able to run on a fuel with a carbon intensity of 75 gCO₂e/MJ or less, such as green methanol, green ammonia, bio-LNG, or bio-LPG.
Selection will favor loaded vessels with higher tonnage. Payments from tolls and services will act as a tiebreaker.
“The NetZero Slot is an unequivocal signal of our commitment to sustainability and the competitiveness of global trade,” said Ilya Espino de Marotta, Deputy Administrator and Chief Sustainability Officer.
