Operaciones Portuarias Canarias S.A. (OPCSA) has placed an order for eight hybrid Konecranes Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes to expand container handling capacity at its terminal in the Port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Signed in September 2025, the order is scheduled for delivery in Q2 2026.

As the Canary Islands’ leading terminal operator, OPCSA continues to play a vital role in regional and international trade. This investment builds on the company’s 2022 acquisition of six hybrid Konecranes RTGs, reinforcing its commitment to high-performance, low-emission operations.

The new RTGs will feature hybrid drives that cut fuel consumption and emissions compared to traditional diesel units. They will also be equipped with Konecranes Smart Features such as Truck Lift Prevention and Auto-Steering, alongside safety measures including fire suppression systems for electrical rooms, hybrid battery packs, and hybrid gensets.

“We’re continuing our journey to modernize and decarbonize our terminal operations, with Konecranes as our trusted partner in that process,” said Javier Zurita Ramírez, Project Manager at OPCSA. “Their excellent hybrid drive technology and the proven reliability of the cranes we received in 2022 made this an easy decision.”

“When a customer makes a new order, it means our equipment is doing its job and the partnership is strong,” added Darryn Scheepers, EMEA Sales Director, Port Solutions, Konecranes. “We’ve listened closely to OPCSA over the years and delivered cranes that meet their evolving needs. This is a model we’re ready to replicate with other terminals aiming for the same balance of performance and sustainability.”

The contract supports Ecolifting, Konecranes’ long-term vision to maximize the environmental benefits of its product and service portfolio while helping customers shrink their carbon footprint. By advancing from eco-optimized diesel drives to hybrid and fully electrified fleets, Konecranes continues to innovate for more efficient, safer, and sustainable material handling.
