At Gastech 2025, ABS granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) for their 16,000 TEU container ship design with electric propulsion.
ABS reviewed the design based on class requirements. The review covered the power system, including power generation, conversion, and propulsion motors.
“ABS, HD KSOE and HHI share a commitment to using our combined expertise to advance electrification in shipping,” said Joshua Divin, ABS Senior Vice President, Marine Business Development. “This AiP marks a major step toward safely integrating electric propulsion into large oceangoing ships.”
Byoung-Hun Kwon, head of HD KSOE’s Electrification Center, called the approval a strategic step toward the IMO’s 2050 carbon-neutral target. “We will continue to earn the trust of global shipping companies by developing eco-friendly, high-efficiency ship technologies at the group level,” he said.
This AiP completes the first phase of development. HD Hyundai will move to phase two in 2026, adding energy storage systems and high-efficiency propulsion drives to accelerate zero-carbon ship technology commercialization.
