Damen wins 24-Vessel UK Navy order

Damen Shipyards Group has signed a major contract with Serco to deliver 24 vessels for the UK Royal Navy. The order forms part of the Defence Maritime Service Next Generation (DMS NG) Vessel Replacement Project, which will modernize the navy’s auxiliary fleet.

Serco recently secured a ten-year contract with the Royal Navy to provide maritime services at His Majesty’s Naval Bases in Clyde, Devonport, and Portsmouth. The scope includes vessel towage, passenger transfers, and barge and tank cleaning — all vital to maintaining safe and efficient harbour operations.

Under the agreement, Serco acts as the prime contractor, while Damen serves as the shipbuilding partner. The order covers a wide mix of vessels, including ASD tugs, RSD tugs, pilot boats, barges, and crane barges. These newbuilds will replace ageing auxiliary units now in service.

This is not the first collaboration between Damen and Serco. The two companies worked together in 2007 on the delivery of 29 vessels under the Future Provision of Maritime Services programme. Since then, they have continued joint projects in the UK and internationally.

Frederik van der Linde, Damen’s Sales Manager UK and Ireland, said the award reaffirms the strong partnership:
“We are delighted to be awarded this significant contract by Serco. It highlights the capabilities of both organisations, and I look forward to the collaboration ahead.”

Serco’s Maritime Services Director, Guy Barker, added:
“This project represents a major step in modernising the Ministry of Defence’s auxiliary fleet. By combining Serco’s operational expertise with Damen’s proven shipbuilding capabilities, we will deliver a fleet that strengthens the Royal Navy’s maritime support operations.”

Delivery of the vessels will begin in 2027 and continue through 2028. Damen will provide ongoing service and support from its UK Service Hub, ensuring maintenance, training, and spare parts availability throughout the fleet’s lifecycle.
