BIO-UV Group has successfully developed and tested a containerised ballast water treatment system. The unit is designed for floating offshore wind projects.
Floating platforms moving across territorial waters face ballast water compliance challenges. BIO-UV’s solution adapts its BIO-SEA technology into a standard TEU container. Operators can now treat ballast water on-site during assembly, transport, or maintenance.
Trials took place at Port-la-Nouvelle in France. The 300m³/h unit passed tests for filtration and UV treatment. It also handled filter backwash safely, converting it into manageable waste for land disposal.
Biological trials were limited by sampling and water variability. Still, discharge water met the IMO D-2 standard in all operations.

The project ran in two phases in 2024. The first focused on engineering and testing. The second addressed market analysis and stakeholder engagement.
Charlene Ceresola, project manager at BIO-UV, said the containerised system is modular and portable. It can also serve as an emergency solution for ships with ballast water system failures. Ports could deploy units on barges or lease them to shipping companies.
BIO-UV launched the first commercial containerised unit this year under a “ballast-as-a-service” rental model. Mediterranean ports, including those in the EU Treasure programme, have shown interest.
The project demonstrates a scalable solution for both offshore wind and port operations. BIO-UV aims to help industries manage water responsibly while supporting environmental compliance.
