Mitsui E&S has secured Approval in Principle (AiP) from ClassNK for an ammonia-fueled LPG/ammonia carrier. The project is a collaboration with Kawasaki Heavy Industries, which is building the vessel.
The ship is designed to run on liquid ammonia, a fuel that emits no CO₂ when burned. Interest in ammonia is growing as the IMO tightens emission rules for shipping.
Mitsui E&S supplied ammonia dual-fuel engines and fuel supply systems for the project. The company also joined a HAZID risk assessment to confirm safety measures. ClassNK granted AiP after reviewing the design and verifying compliance with its standards.
As a major player in marine propulsion, Mitsui E&S has made decarbonization a core priority. The company says its ammonia dual-fuel technology will help the maritime sector transition to carbon-neutral logistics.
