According to Japan International Freight Forwarders Association (JIFFA), Japan’s government has met with shipping leaders to discuss the potential impact of U.S. tariffs and related trade policies. State Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Yasushi Furukawa held talks with executives from Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” Line), and the Japanese Shipowners’ Association (JSA).

Industry representatives warned that the global economic outlook remains uncertain, with U.S.-bound shipments likely to contract. They expressed concern that new port entry fees under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 would create a serious barrier for Japan’s shipping companies and disrupt global supply chains. The delegation urged the government to press Washington to reconsider or withdraw the measures.

Furukawa said the concerns would be shared across the government and promised to review possible responses.
