NZ customs taps WiseTech to modernize tariff system

The New Zealand Customs Service picked WiseTech Global to digitize its Working Tariff Document. WiseTech, a leading logistics software firm, will streamline the complex tariff system. The Working Tariff, based on the World Customs Organization’s Harmonized System, classifies over 98% of global trade goods. It sets duties, taxes, and levies for goods entering or leaving New Zealand. It also tracks trade flows and ensures compliance with global rules.

WiseTech will launch an online Customs Tariff Management Portal. This tool replaces scattered emails, paper documents, and old processes. It simplifies tariff updates for agencies like Customs and the Ministry for Primary Industries. The system ensures accurate trade data.

WiseTech offers a free BorderWise Community Edition for New Zealand. This provides a searchable, current Working Tariff. It supports PDF and printed versions. Importers, exporters, brokers, and agencies can use it at no cost. Upgrades include access to other major economies’ tariffs.

The seven-year contract, with renewal options, followed a competitive tender. It includes a two-year rollout phase. The portal handles tariff data in human- and computer-readable formats. WiseTech aims to expand this solution globally.

Zubin Appoo, WiseTech’s CEO, hailed the project. “It leverages our customs expertise,” he said. “We’re boosting global trade efficiency.”
