Damen launches new Island Class ferry for BC Ferries

Damen Shipyards has launched the second of four new Island Class ferries for BC Ferries at its Galati yard in Romania. The vessels will provide low-emission services connecting coastal communities across British Columbia.

The Island Class design is based on Damen’s 8117 Electric Ferry (E3) and marks the eighth vessel of this type built for BC Ferries. The new ferries will operate on diesel-electric hybrid propulsion, with the goal of running fully on electric power once the necessary shore-side infrastructure is in place.

The vessels will serve routes between Nanaimo and Gabriola Island, and Campbell River and Quadra Island. Damen is also supplying onshore charging equipment and will continue support through its BC-based Service Hub during the ferries’ operational phase.

Sustainability is a key focus. The current build incorporates modifications to reduce underwater noise, helping protect marine life, including the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whale. Hull designs were optimized using CFD simulations, towing tank testing, and new quieter propeller blades.

Leo Postma, Damen Executive Director Global Sales, said the project highlights the strong partnership with BC Ferries. “Our cooperation continues to drive innovation and progress across the Island Class fleet,” he said.
