Port Houston achieves double-digit growth

Port Houston recorded one of its strongest months on record in July 2025, as container volumes surged by 21% year-on-year, reaching 392,829 TEUs.

The milestone pushed year-to-date totals to 2,562,506 TEUs, representing a 6% increase and marking the fastest pace of growth in the Port’s history.

July’s performance was driven by robust increases in both imports and exports. Loaded imports rose 19%, the largest gain among the nation’s top five container ports, while loaded exports dominated by resins grew 18% compared to last year.

Overall, total loaded containers are up 5% year-to-date, consolidating Port Houston’s position as the market leader in resin exports.

Growth extended beyond containers. General cargo volumes at the public terminals rose 10 percent year-to-date, with steel imports a key input for the oil and gas industry up 41% in July and 8% year-to-date, totaling 2.7 million short tons.

Across all categories, throughput at Port Houston’s public facilities reached 32.6 million short tons through July, a 6% increase over 2024.

Charlie Jenkins, CEO of Port Houston, credited the results to a strong customer partnership as July’s volume performance reflects the Port’s commitment to providing a low-cost, high-service, low-risk gateway.

Jenkins also emphasized the importance of continued investment in infrastructure.

Among current projects, Wharf 7 at Bayport Container Terminal is set to be delivered nearly two months ahead of schedule in December. The new 1,000-foot berth will expand vessel capacity from four to five ships, reducing anchorage wait times and increasing efficiency.

Also the Houston Ship Channel Expansion was recently awarded the Environmental Excellence Award from the Western Dredging Association for its beneficial-use approach.

Nearly 15 million cubic yards of dredged material from the Galveston Bay segment have already been repurposed to create 10 acres of bird islands, 276 acres of intertidal marsh, and 324 acres of oyster reefs, while unlocking over 600 acres of future operational capacity.

With the expansion now enabling 17,000 TEU vessels to call Bayport Terminal, the final Port-led phase of dredging is set for completion later this summer, with additional segments to be managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
