GXO Logistics and B&Q are making strong progress toward their joint ambition of achieving net-zero carbon emissions across B&Q’s logistics operations by 2040.
Supporting B&Q’s extensive e-commerce and click-and-collect business with more than 700,000 products available GXO has helped the retailer drive innovation and sustainability, in line with owner Kingfisher’s vision of “Better Homes.
Gavin Williams, Managing Director of GXO UK & Ireland, underlined the scale of the challenge and the importance of collaboration saying that achieving zero emissions in logistics transport requires a combination of strategies. B&Q’s approach is a model for the industry, showing how efficiency and sustainability can go hand in hand.
Darren Hall, B&Q’s Director of Logistics, highlighted the customer impact adding that decarbonising the fleet with available technologies is a crucial step in the transition to alternative fuels.
In 2022, the partners launched the B&Q Sustainability Glidepath, a detailed roadmap to decarbonise the fleet. By combining operational improvements, emissions reporting, and targeted initiatives, B&Q cut its 2024 emissions forecast by 40 percent, moving ahead of schedule on its glidepath to net zero.
Since 2019, B&Q has deployed 105 LNG-powered vehicles, building the UK’s second-largest LNG fleet and cutting emissions by 16,000 tonnes.
In December 2024, all remaining diesel vehicles and 80 refrigerated trailers were converted to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), a fuel that reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 90 percent.
Looking ahead, B&Q is piloting GXO’s AI-powered transport optimisation platform, which analyses millions of route variations to identify the most efficient schedules.
Early results suggest savings of 240,000 kilometres and 150 tonnes of CO₂ annually, with full implementation planned later in 2025.
