The Port of Oakland’s loaded container volume continues its steady month-over-month growth, with a 5.4% increase in August compared to the same month last year.

Loaded imports saw a significant 14.9% rise, totalling 83,272 TEUs in August 2024, up from 72,481 TEUs in August 2023.

“This growth reflects the ongoing surge in demand from U.S. manufacturers for products from Asian suppliers,” said Port of Oakland.

In contrast, empty imports decreased by 11.3%, with 11,823 TEUs passing through the Port in August 2024. Empty exports, however, surged by 25.9%, reaching 38,507 TEUs.

Loaded exports experienced a 5.5% decline, with 59,362 TEUs handled in August 2024, down from 62,785 TEUs in August 2023.

“This drop is attributed to the typical seasonal slowdown in Northern California, though a significant rise in exports is expected as harvested crops enter the market,” noted the Californian port.

It’s worth noting that 2024 marks the first year since 2019 that export volumes have shown growth, and overall export volume for the year is up compared to 2023.

“We are preparing for a strong fourth quarter. All indicators point to strong import volumes fueled by consumer spending during the upcoming holiday season,” stated Bryan Brandes, Port of Oakland Maritime Director.
