Maritime tech innovator OrbitMI has struck a deal to acquire Quebec-based artificial intelligence company AuQub.
The acquisition deepens OrbitMI’s investment in intelligent, connected workflows by embedding AuQub’s advanced AI agents into its platform. These agents specialise in automating repetitive tasks and optimising operational processes.
“Artificial intelligence is central to our mission of making maritime more intelligent,” said Ali Riaz, CEO of OrbitMI. “With AuQub’s technology and talent now part of OrbitMI, we’re accelerating our ability to turn data into insight and insight into action—across the entire maritime value chain.”
As part of the deal, AuQub co-founder Alexandre Lapointe has been named chief product officer at OrbitMI.
“This is the first move I can think of where an organisation has specifically acqui-hired expertise in agentic AI, rather than just [large language models],” commented Nick Chubb via LinkedIn. Chubb runs UK-based Thetius, a consultancy keeping track of maritime tech developments.
OrbitMI’s Orbit Reporter solution is already well-regarded in the maritime tech community for its emissions tracking, data reporting, and voyage optimisation tools. With AuQub’s SaaS capabilities onboard, the New York-based firm plans to strengthen its real-time analytical tools to better anticipate regulatory changes and streamline operational decisions.
