Public and private sector partners from Latvia and Germany have signed a Memorandum of Understandin in Hamburg this week to boost cooperation in digital innovation for maritime technology, with a particular focus on advancing port infrastructure and connectivity.
The MoU brings together key players from both countries, including Latvian telecommunications leader LMT, the Freeport of Riga, Port of Hamburg, SIA “Elektroniskie sakari”, the Port of Hamburg Fleet, and LVR Flote.
Viktors Valainis, Latvia’s Minister of Economy noted that by addressing shared challenges in the Baltic Sea through digital maritime innovation, they are strengthening bilateral ties and setting a precedent for collective action on future maritime issues.
The agreement sets clear objectives: to identify current challenges in the maritime and port sectors and to jointly develop practical digital solutions, with the aim of launching a proof-of-concept demonstration. Several specialized working groups will be established to lead this effort.
A Port Connectivity Working Group will focus on mobile network deployment, including 5G private network infrastructure, while the Smart Infrastructure and Cyber Security Working Group will explore areas such as AI-powered analytics, smart monitoring systems, and digital resilience.
Ingmārs Pūķis, Vice President of LMT, added that Ports are critical nodes in global infrastructure and digitizing their operations not only strengthens security and efficiency but also ensures they are ready to meet future demands.
This MoU builds on a long-standing relationship between German and Latvian port stakeholders.
