Peel Ports Group has officially inaugurated its new GB£30 million (US$40 million) RoRo berth at London Medway, marking a major milestone in the port’s infrastructure development and strengthening the UK’s logistics capabilities.

The new in-river berth and floating pontoon at the Port of Sheerness was unveiled during a formal ceremony attended by industry stakeholders and partners.

The facility is set to significantly enhance RoRo cargo handling capacity, operational efficiency, and supply chain resilience for the region.

To mark the launch, the Peel Ports welcomed one of Finnlines’ new Finneco-class hybrid RoRo vessels, which are now part of a weekly freight service connecting the United Kingdom with Finland, Poland, Belgium, and Spain.

The service brings faster transit times, increased cargo capacity, and streamlined loading and unloading processes, helping to build more efficient and reliable supply chains across Northern and Continental Europe.

Richard Goffin, Port Director at Peel Ports, highlighted that this investment not only boosts the port’s capacity but also strengthens the wider supply chain, future-proofs operations, and enhances service flexibility for the operator’s customers.

Finnlines’ expanded freight service—launched in September—operates with three Finneco-class hybrid RoRo vessels, each capable of carrying 5,800 lane metres, equivalent to around 400 trailers. The new berth is designed to accommodate a variety of cargo.

It also supports the continued growth of major customers such as Volkswagen and CEVA, which use London Medway as their primary hub for southern UK operations.

The UK port already handles over 300,000 vehicles annually, playing a central role in the UK’s automotive supply chain.

Looking ahead, Peel Ports plans further investments at London Medway, including a new rail link to improve intermodal freight movement and enhance the port’s overall integration and efficiency.
