Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), met with leading Greek shipowners on Thursday to explore the potential of nuclear-powered commercial vessels.
The talks come as the UN agency launches ATLAS — Atomic Technology Licensed for Applications at Sea — an initiative aimed at creating a regulatory and safety framework for integrating nuclear reactors into maritime transport. The initiative seeks to curb global emissions, improve vessel efficiency, and contribute to reduced transportation costs, ultimately helping lower consumer goods prices, including food.
Grossi’s visit to Athens included meetings with foreign minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, development minister Takis Theodorikakos, and top representatives of the Union of Greek Shipowners.
“We are at an important moment for nuclear science and technology, opening new opportunities for Greece – such as the IAEA’s ATLAS initiative for the maritime sector,” Grossi stated in a post following the meetings.
The IAEA is expected to continue engaging with governments, regulators, and industry leaders in the months ahead to build consensus on nuclear maritime safety and regulation.
