A new £35 million cement import terminal at the Port of Liverpool is set to support the UK’s growing construction sector and help cut carbon emissions.
The project is a joint venture between Peel Ports Group and Medcem, and will transform the former P&O site at Gladstone Dock into a deep-water terminal.
The facility aims to meet rising demand for sustainable building materials, aligned with the UK government’s goal to build 1.5 million homes by the end of the current parliamentary term.
Enver Celikbas, Business Development and Investments Director at Medcem noted that Liverpool’s logistical strengths will improve vessel access and product handling, enhancing our supply chain efficiency.
Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2025, with completion expected by mid-2026. The initial phase includes four silos with a total capacity of 45,000 tonnes, capable of storing both cement and supplementary cementitious materials such as fly ash and blast furnace slag key to producing low-carbon concrete.
The 5.75-acre site also offers room for future expansion to meet long-term infrastructure needs.
