Telia is preparing to launch Lithuania’s first 5G standalone network at Klaipeda Port, marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital infrastructure.

The pilot will provide the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority and port-based companies with access to a private 5G network, showcasing its potential for critical infrastructure applications across Lithuania.

Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, mentioned that Klaipeda Port is already one of the most technologically advanced ports in the Baltic Sea region as the KIPIS freight and goods information system and the LUVIS shipping management system have already been implemented, while he stressed the development of a digital port twin.

Giedrė Kaminskaitė-Salters, Head of Telia Lithuania, added that this network architecture boosts resilience against hybrid threats and significantly improves data transmission speeds.

Port staff will also transition from traditional walkie-talkies to a 5G-enabled Push-to-Talk (PTT) system, integrated into a smartphone app.

This system will deliver superior audio quality, broader coverage, and dedicated communication channels for different port departments—continuing to function even during public network disruptions.

According to global internet performance analytics firm Ookla, only 10% of mobile operators worldwide have commercially deployed 5G SA networks, placing this initiative at the forefront of global technological adoption.
