Pilbara Ports has launched a new initiative to enhance seafarer welfare by improving onboard WiFi connectivity in the Port of Port Hedland.
The Pilbara Ports Ship WiFi Support Program will replace individual SIM card recharges with free ship-wide internet access and data top-ups to participating vessels upon each return to the Port of Port Hedland.
The new initiative transitions away from individual SIM card support for mariners, instead enabling ship-wide WiFi access through a mobile WiFi system.
This transition enables broader internet access to all crew members onboard, ensuring greater connectivity with families and loved ones, supporting both mental health and wellbeing.
Pilbara Ports Executive General Manager Marine, Captain Philip Christy, said this initiative was a meaningful step toward valuing the people who made global trade possible. “As professionals who are responsible for maintaining the smooth operations of large vessels calling at our ports, it’s imperative that we provide a safe and innovative way for seafarers to stay connected with loved ones,” he said.
Vessels are encouraged to acquire the designated Ship WiFi Pack, which includes a Mobile WiFi Router (Telstra SIM enabled) and a Mesh WiFi Extender. Once installed, data will be remotely topped up by the Port Hedland Seafarers Centre for the duration of each port call or anchorage stay.
