DP World-owned Drydocks World has signed a contract with Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC) to acquire a next-generation 5,000-tonne Floating Sheerleg Crane, designed to meet the rising demand for large-scale offshore projects.

The signing ceremony took place in Dubai, with prominent attendees including Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, Captain Rado Antolovic, PhD, CEO of Drydocks World, ZPMC Chairman You Ruikai, and senior leadership from both organizations.

“Our investment in such a significant piece of equipment marks a strategic milestone for Drydocks World and demonstrates our commitment to enhancing our offerings to customers and achieving operational excellence worldwide. Once operational, this giant crane will strengthen our leadership in the maritime industry and boost our ability to support projects that drive regional economic growth,” commented Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World.

The crane’s design, construction, testing, and commissioning will span approximately 24 months, with completion expected in the second quarter of 2026.

Once operational, the crane will significantly enhance Drydocks World’s heavy-lifting capabilities, enabling it to meet the demands of major offshore projects such as high-voltage offshore converter platforms and Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel topsides.

Furthermore, this investment builds on Drydocks World’s previous successes, including the conversion of Tango FLNG and Excalibur FSU vessels, refurbishment and conversion of Firenze FPSO, and the ongoing EPC work on the UK Norfolk Vanguard Offshore Wind Platforms.

The new crane will feature a 160-meter-long A-frame, capable of lifting loads of up to 5,000 tonnes to a height of 120 meters above water. Its 600-tonne fly jib extends the reach to 180 meters, enabling efficient installation of large vessel modules both nearshore and offshore.

Additionally, it can accommodate up to 50 personnel offshore, minimizing the need for support vessels. The crane’s versatility makes it ideal for constructing offshore platforms, bridges, and other marine infrastructure.
