DHL Freight has officially inaugurated its new logistics terminal in Berlin-Marienfelde, Germany. Spanning 5,200 square meters with 48 loading docks and state-of-the-art infrastructure, the facility replaces the existing Berlin terminal, which had reached full capacity.

Strategically located and designed with sustainability in mind, the new site sets new standards for logistics and environmental responsibility in the Berlin region.

Thomas Vogel, CEO of DHL Freight DACH, UK & IE, stated: “The new city terminal in Berlin not only expands our capacities but also reflects our commitment to more sustainable logistics. In addition to various alternative drive technologies such as electric trucks, at the site itself, we have placed importance on measures such as photovoltaics, wind turbines and the latest in water management.”

“With modern technologies and optimized processes, we can contribute to making the transport of goods in the region not only more efficient but also more sustainable. This creates double value for our customers and our environment.”

Built in alignment with DHL’s sustainability strategy, the terminal incorporates a comprehensive eco-friendly concept. The local transport fleet is transitioning to alternative drive systems, including electric forklifts, natural gas-powered trucks, and battery-electric vehicles for last-mile deliveries.

The facility is optimized for energy efficiency, featuring a heat pump system for temperature control, a rainwater cistern for water conservation, and energy-saving LED lighting.

Charging stations powered by renewable energy are available for both local and long-haul vehicles, while a photovoltaic system and wind turbines further support the terminal’s holistic energy concept.

The Marienfelde terminal is a key part of DHL Freight’s long-term growth strategy. Its location in southern Berlin enhances efficiency and service quality for customers in and around the German capital while strengthening DHL Freight’s European network.

In addition to managing LTL and FTL shipments, the site will serve as a testing ground for innovative logistics solutions to meet future industry demands.

The terminal was developed on a former industrial site on Buckower Chaussee, with Operatio GmbH and Bremer Berlin-Brandenburg GmbH leading the project. Construction began in November 2023, and within just 14 months, a modern freight forwarding facility was completed on the 20,000-square-meter site, replacing the previous downtown terminal. Alongside its Marienfelde location, DHL Freight also operates a site in Wustermark, together forming a strong logistics hub for the Berlin-Brandenburg region.
